The 2008 Olympic Volunteer Team
Good afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen, Planning on checking out the 2008 Olympic Games? If so, keep your eyes open for a special team. Who are they? They're the team of volunteers.
For the 2008 Olympic Games, an incredible number of 100,000 volunteers are needed. As a medical major, I have applied for the professional category. Now I am working on relevant skills with my medical abilities, and how to welcome people from the world.
Well, some of you may ask What if I don't have any special skills. That's okay. You can apply for the common category, where ticket takers, greeters, and other support staff are needed. Almost anyone can apply, and even foreigner friends have a chance.
"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win, but to take part in it". If you want to be an Olympic volunteer, be sure to check out this website: en.beijing2008.com. See you in Beijing 2008!
The most difficult question for me to answer is “how do you learn English?”, because I was totally drawing a blank in my mind about this huge topic. It was, in retrospect, not until my freshman year that I virtually began to learn this language. Before that, I just studied English for tests, thus, could not speak even one word, which is probably true for most Chinese students. To be frank, I would not pull it off without the solid grammatical and vocabulary foundation laid by my high school English teachers.
Personally, I would like to consider the whole English learning process as a journey, which is full of both miracles and diversions. “Eyes straight ahead and never get distracted” is what I keep repeating as I grip the “steering wheel”, driving down the “road”. There were plenty of distractions to lure us off the road.
Here come some secrets which I would like to share with everyone.
Secret number one: keep balance between “output” and “input”. But first lets define what are the output and input, which, in fact, are an integrated whole. “Input” mainly refers to reading and listening, while “Output” means speaking and writing. English learning is all about keeping the balance between them, which is like a successful formula. Remember, if you don’t use it, you will lost it.
Secret number two: Be persistent. This is undoubtedly the most crucial rule in any learning experience. We need enormous amount of stamina and endurance to keep moving on. It can be frustrated when you find yourself literally stagnant. This is the moment when our patience and envision kick in, never give up. We got to be visualizes, keeping your eyes straight ahead for the spectacular views that are coming up next. Only with this self-motivated mentality, can we steer through this whole “road trip”.
Secret number three: Make the best use of our time. The most common excuse for people is “I don’t have time for English learning”. To elucidate this point, I will cite my “crazy” story as an example. As a medical major, I have a pretty tight schedule everyday, with so many subjects to learn, and professional journals to read. It took me one year to figure out that I would never have one or two whole hours’ English learning time everyday. Instead of giving up, I was finally able to fit the English learning thing into my schedule, by carrying a walkman (later an Mp3 player, which I bought in my sophomore year) with me wherever I went. It is my habit to put on my earplugs when doing shopping, laundry, or riding bicycle, etc. Even ten or five minutes are valuable to me, because every day a little bit, after a while, they will be a lot. So technically, I am squeezing time out of my daily life. That is how I did it.
Final secret: There is no secret or shortcut. As for this point, I don’t want to give any redundant interpretation.
In conclusion, keeping practicing and learning circulation, sticking with it, making as much time as you can, and never taking the shortcut are the most effective ways to improve our English. Anyway, I hope you guys can pay heed and have a bright future.
