“Everything here is tagged Made in China. But I sensed some disappointment in her voice. I haven’t found any Chinese brand so far. It seems that China only produces other people’s stuff. Her words were thought provoking. China, as the world’s factory, performs only the manufacturing segment for foreign brands. “Made in China” has even become a symbol of cheap products. It’s been said that China has to export 800 million shirts to get an airplane. What we are missing is sustainable competence that comes from trademarks, patents and designs. China can only gain a cutting edge in the global arena, of our enterprises move up the value chain and create products of their own. This transformation will be no less like a marathon. Luckily, some Chinese enterprises are already in business or the long run. They point the way for other enterprises with three strategies: brand identity, innovation of technology and modern management systems. The first strategy was to establish brand identity, which is a company’s personality. The Lenovo Group, the third largest PC maker in the world, was originally known as the Legend Group. When it entered the global market, it found the name Legend was too ordinary and frequently used. The company knew how important it was to establish a brand that would make it stand out. Thus it changed its name into Lenovo, taking what means new in Latin-novo. Now this unique brand is widely recognized around the globe. What follows is the innovation of technology. It can free Chinese enterprises from their dependency on foreign technology and increase added value of their products. Haier, the third largest, largest household appliances maker in the world owes its success to constant innovation. Over the last 16 years, Haier has invested over 7 billion RMB in technological development. Up till now, Haier still meets its goal by creation over one new product a day, maintaining its upper-hand in the global competition. The fundamental strategy is to establish mechanisms that ensure a smooth transition. Nowadays, modern management system have produced overwhelming advantage. They can ensure efficient division of labor and vitality in the business cycle. The New Hope Group, an originally family-owned business, found itself trapped by the limitation and inefficiency of being run by family members together. After the enterprise turned itself into a limited liability company that distributed shares efficiently, its business started to flourish and became the national leading enterprise for agriculture. China’s growth will not stop merely at manufacturing. With brand identity, innovation of technology and modern management systems, Chinese enterprises will stand strong in the global competition. I believe that one day, my friend in the US together with all the Chinese people around the world, will proudly find abundant products tagged “Created in China”
